This is in regards to the subsidy of local voice telephony service in rural locations in our province of Saskatchewan. My family in particular would be negatively affected by this. We have a family farm approximately 1 hour north east of Regina. There is little to no cellular coverage on the farm due to the terrain therefore it absolutely cannot be relied upon as an alternative. The telephone service is important for maintaining contact with family, for business needs as well as emergency and health needs. This is the case for the neighbours in the surrounding area as well. As a rural subscriber, they already pay much higher basic rates due to location and incur far more long distance calling than in the cities and towns. The farming families of our province are very important to the viability of not only our province, but to the country as a whole.

I also have family members who live in remote areas of the province (far northern Saskatchewan). In these locations as well, the copper phone line is their most reliable connection to the world, as high speed service is either non-existent or of a dial-up quality. Life in northern Saskatchewan is already very expensive; to increase the cost of basic telephone service to these people would also become a hardship and put a lot of people's lives in danger (if they are unable to call police or for health services for example). These are basic needs that all people of today's society should have access to.

By removing subsidies, it would negatively impact the lives of many, many people as they would not be able to afford what is a basic necessity to the majority of the world. Please keep this subsidy so that Canada can continue to be a great place to live. Let's work to help our fellow neighbours.
