LETTER OF SUPPORT
TV Cogeco – Windsor

Is a physical local presence still needed in the digital age? Are studio facilities and local staff required to provide meaningful locally reflective and locally relevant programming? If so, what financial resources, infrastructure and staff are necessary?

Attention Commission,

More than ever, I believe TV Cogeco – Windsor-Essex is needed to champion local events, outstanding individuals and to be a conduit to local fundraising efforts. Considering the flood of digital content being pushed out in each and every direction, I believe that it has diluted the effectiveness of any one digital platform. If there is “one” local digital champion serving the community mandate fully and widely, I’ve yet to discover it.

This leaves traditional media to serve an important role and sadly, commercial television stations licensed in our market are offering less and less local programming outside of nightly newscasts. You can imagine the plethora of American channels that encroach and complete in the Windsor Ontario area.

Local radio serves the commuter and office tuning audience in our market and does a respectable job. However, there is no substitute for what our TV Cogeco provides. Whether it’s coverage of our local sports teams, parades, community interview programs or fundraising efforts, TV Cogeco are trusted advocates for hyper-local content and community need. If not for their existence and mandate, many residents in our area, of all ages and especially older adults, would be deprived of this content. Who would fill their shoes? Absolutely no one.

As President of the Rotary Club of Windsor St-Clair, I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing the importance of community television. Our Rotary Club have partnered with, and relied on TV Cogeco for the past 29 years to raise significant dollars as well as to promote the work of Rotary in our local and international community.

The annual TV Auction requires a yeoman’s effort from a small army of volunteers, from both our club members and especially from TV Cogeco volunteers. Two full evenings of programming each November, results in over $50,000 raised annually to fund a wide variety of local and international efforts as directed by our Rotary Club.
This review not only provides a wonderful opportunity to evaluate the relevance of community television but to consider further investment into this necessary service.
